Now Grayson has sworn to kill any man who has ever been a protégé of Darius… including a mortal man named Victor Paulus, a possible future candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize and another Immortal… called Duncan MacLeod.

Duncan, out gathering shopping, stumbles across one such incident and overhears the police noting that the various deaths are prominent legal figures in Paris. The detective investigating the incidents thinks MacLeod looks familiar. In deck and fully clothed, Duncan and Fitz reminisce over several cups of mead. They talk about Darius and though Fitz can understand an Immortal finding religion… giving up women? That’s baffling. But there are more important things to discuss. Fitz has noted that many Immortals are vanishing. One or two might be part of the mythical Gathering as Immortals fight each other for the final ‘Prize’… but three or more, with no Quickenings or bodies to be found? They decide to visit Darius to see if he has any wisdom to impart from Holy Ground.
But someone else has already decided to visit Darius. When Duncan and Fitz arrive, they find the church pews turned over and Darius dead, decapitated… the kind of death that is final even for Immortals. But how could this have happened on Holy Ground? No Immortal would dare defy the rules.
And if it wasn’t an Immortal who committed this act, might the situation even worse? If there are humans who know about immortality and how to end Immortal lives, then how do they know and what is their agenda?
In a hidey-hole within the chamber where Darius and Duncan played chess -and wrapped in MacLeod tartan – Duncan is finally about to learn of his friend’s legacy and about an organisation that has observed but never interfered… until now.
