ENDGAMING? DONNIE YEN TO STAR IN ‘JOHN WICK’ SPIN-OFF…

The John Wick franchise – and its ongoing sequels and spin-off features – has become something of a phenomena in recent years. Not only has Keanu Reeves returned a number of times, continuing to avenge his canine friend and take-out anyone who gets in his way, but we’ve also met a number of his fellow assassins, both friends and foes. There was even a mini-series looking at the origins of The Continental, the safe-ground on which they sometimes meet.

Now, eastern star Donnie Yen is to reprise the role of Caine. The character first appeared in 2023’s fourth John Wick movie in which Wick helped free Caine from his obligations to ’The High Table’ overlords.  The new film, expected to start shooting soon, will take place after those events. Not only will Yen star but he will also direct.

“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero,” said Yen. “This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”

Yen, a massive creative force in eastern cinema and beyond, made his western industry breakthrough as Jin Ke in Highlander: Endgame and continues to be a powerhouse as a writer, director, producer and starring in the likes of the Ip Man movies and Star Wars: Rogue One (in which he also played a vision-impaired, would-be Jedi, Chirrut Imwe).
