HENRY CAVILL WILL STILL BE GOING TO WAR (HAMMER)…

Once Henry Cavill is finished filming on Highlander, he’ll get to undertake another of his passion-projects.

It’s well-known that Cavill is a hugely informed and enthusiastic RPG player, particularly of the Warhammer 4K variety, so the announcement that he would star and help steer a major new production based on the game received a very positive response and was seen as a major opportunity to move the gameplay even further into the mainstream.

Cavill is attached as an executive producer – but it’s not a decorative title, it’s one with significant creative input. He’s mentioned his love for the gameplay during interviews for other projects and it’s a passion that goes as far as painting his own miniature figures and knowing the lore and mythology of the Warhammer saga. It’s well-known that he walked away from The Witcher television series when the direction of the show was going to deviate too far from the source material, so he’s seen as the right kind of person to champion Warhammer with a similar level of commitment.

The project is a collaboration between Amazon Studios and Games Workshop and, interestingly, it was announced as a multi-format deal, so the eventual project may well expand to cover more than a singular series or even a movie.  But development has been slowly moving along for three years of discussions and planning is still in pre-production phase, so there’s still some way to go before fans see Cavill suit-up in the armour and it’s not known the exact format at this point.

Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree revealed earlier this year that one of the creative talents behind the scenes would be Mike Flanagan, best known for the likes of The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and the upcoming Carrie. This indicates the tone of the Warhammer 4K project might have a darker edge.

Cavill has acknowledged the complexity of bringing Warhammer to the screen, so it could still be a long while before everything falls into place…
